The fundamentals of Saga Furs – quality, innovation and sustainability

Saga Furs began operating in the fur industry in 1938. Since then, we have been collecting and offering the highest quality fur pelts and guaranteeing the fundamental value of sustainability.

Our commitment is to promote the sustainable production of European and North American furs sold at international auctions and, thus, to market the Saga® Fox, Mink, and Finnraccoon collections globally.

The Saga Furs brand is the supplier of raw materials for the global fashion industry in Europe, North America and Asia.

Natural fur, the natural choice

As we all know, sustainability is the ability to meet current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Sustainability in fashion companies increasingly involves a commitment to product traceability, and Saga Furs is a leader in this mission.

Saga Furs’ new Saga Trac RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) programme provides traceability of fur products to certified and audited farms. RFID confirms the country of origin, certification policy and FurmarkTM authenticity, i.e., the comprehensive global certification system for natural fur that guarantees animal welfare standards at farms that have independent inspections and third-party audits.

In contrast, synthetic fur is generally made of petroleum derivatives, a non-renewable resource. These materials do not decompose easily and remain in landfills for centuries, like other plastics. In addition, the production, transport, and disposal of petrochemicals can cause significant environmental problems.

Heritage of the auction house

The Saga Furs auction house was founded in 1938 by the Finnish Fur Farmers’ Association. The first local auctions were held in the 1940s, laying the foundation for the international brand and the auction house as it is known today. Over the years, as the company gained repute in the industry, it also became the first and still the only listed fur auction company. The company was listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange in 1986.

Moreover, the company, which has always been focused on innovation and creativity, is providing concrete support to young designers with the establishment of the Creative Hub in Helsinki. The Creative Hub is a visionary laboratory that encourages the development of new ideas in the field of fur, both in the fashion and interior design sectors.

To support and give visibility to the ideas and new techniques developed by the Creative Hub, Saga Furs launched Fur Vision, an event created to celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of a versatile and aspirational material like fur in the major fashion capitals (New York, London, Paris, Milan, Hong Kong, Moscow, etc.). The ambition of Fur Vision is to show and present to fashion companies’ and designers the new ways of using and processing the material, allowing new interpretations and declinations, and assisting designers in finding inspiration for future collections and acquiring more information on the theme of sustainability linked to the fur product.

Saga Furs has introduced the industry’s first CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy by adhering to the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest strategic corporate citizenship initiative to promote a sustainable global economy. As a signatory of the UN Global Compact, we support the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative that spans over human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. We also contribute to reaching the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Saga Furs today

Commitment to sustainability is a fundamental component in the philosophy of Saga Furs, which today is increasingly at the center of attention in the fashion world. Sustainability in the fur industry involves new techniques, e.g., the minimization of waste materials and certification, traceability, and circular economy related to raw material.

Unlike other materials in the textile industry, fur garments can be recycled and transformed according to fashion trends.

The focus is undoubtedly on sustainable slow fashion realized with both good design, durable materials and with valuing craftsmanship – all dedicated to the creation of timeless garments. Saga Furs is currently presenting new projects on sustainability to communicate a new image of the business.

Today, the auction house’s mission is to discover creatives who value an unusual, versatile, and rich material – fur. Young talents are called upon to be creative with a material that is simultaneously difficult and fascinating. The aim is to encourage creatives to precisely capture that eternal essence of fur garments by exploring all possible reinterpretations and variants, with no limits on creativity and innovation.
